NADINE WOTTKE Lebt und arbeitet in Erfurt Scroll down for English and CV WIDMER+THEODORIDIS contemporary freut sich zum Saisonauftakt Stefan Thiel und Nadine Wottke in einer gemeinsamen Ausstellung zu präsentieren. Die Idee zu ‘If you can, give me love’ beruht auf dem Wunsch der beiden Künstler zusammen auszustellen und lässt ihre neuen Arbeiten in einen spannenden Dialog treten. Der Ausstellungstitel ist dem bekannten Song ‘If you can‘t, give me love’ von Suzie Quatro aus dem Jahr 1978 entlehnt. Eine damals rockige Ballade in der Quatro von einer flüchtigen Diskothek-Bekanntschaft Liebe einfordert: Liebe und nicht einen One Night Stand. Als die freie Liebe in den 60er Jahren durch die Entwicklung der Anti Baby Pille ihren Siegeszug antrat die biederen Moralvorstellungen wegzufegen, konnte sich niemand vorstellen, was sich alles verändern würde – oder eben nicht. Zusammen mit der sexuellen Freiheit der 70er Jahre hat sich nicht nur unser Liebesleben gewandelt und liberalisiert. Die Ökologie-, Anti-Atomkraft-, Friedens-, Frauen- und Schwulenbewegung sind nur einige Beispiele für den politischen- und sozialen Umbruch der zur selben Zeit stattfand. Und mit dem Internet und seiner gleichsam grenzenlosen Bilderflut wird heute unsere Neugier und Lust auf einfachste Weise bedient und gestillt. Sex, ob real oder virtuell ist jederzeit verfügbar. Und doch scheint die Sache mit der Liebe trotz allen Freiheiten und Möglichkeiten ihre Crux zu haben. Denn wenn es zur Sache kommt, ist der Mensch real, auf sich gestellt und vor allem verletzlich. Thiel und Wottke blicken kess hinter den Vorhang der Selbstdarstellung und Selbstfindung: entwaffnende Ansichten nackter Menschen. Ausgehend vom ‘album amicorum’ des 19. Jahrhunderts, das Silhouettenschnitte von Freunden umfasste, schlägt Thiel eine Brücke zur Facebook Freundesliste unserer Zeit. Sein ‘Black Face Book’ zeigt homoerotische Formen der Selbstdarstellung, die er zunächst aus dem Internet sammelte und später selbst inszenierte und fotografierte. Album amicorum und Facebook unterscheiden sich in ihren Vorzeichen. Denn während das Verschenken der Silhouette ein Zeichen einer bestehenden Freundschaft war, erscheinen in Facebook Bewerbungsfotos erst um diese Freundschaften zu begründen. Und wie in der Bewerbung versucht man sich selbst perfekt und begehrenswert darzustellen. Thiels Ausblenden fotografischer Details, der Schritt zurück in die Silhouette zeigt die Muster dieser Konventionen und fordert uns auf, die Leerstelle selbst mit unseren Standards und Phantasien anzufüllen. In Wottkes Porzellanfiguren spiegeln Fantasien unsere existenzielle Verletzlichkeit und unsere Hoffnungen. Die Figur auf dem Stier in ‘I don't want your freedom’ offenbart sich nackt und lustvoll auf einer Bullrider Maschine und bläst cool eine rosa Kaugummi Blase auf. Es ist dieser kurze Moment der Erkenntnis, in dem wir vor unserem inneren Auge nackt dastehen und uns selbst erkennen, den Wottke festhält. Der kurze Moment, in dem wir befreit von äusseren und inneren Zwängen tief Luft holen, loslassen und begreifen. Die nackten Körper und Fetischobjekte bei Wottkes Figuren dienen also nicht zur Darstellung sexueller Präferenzen sondern wirken als emotionale Hilfestellungen bei der Bergung existenzieller Rätsel. Trotz liberalen Lebensformen und technischen Hilfsmitteln hat sich der Mensch betreffend Lebensfragen und Lebenstauglichkeit nicht gross verändert. So erstaunt es nicht, dass schon Quatro, die unabhängige Rockerbraut nach einem romantischen Happy End schmachtet: ‘That ain’t enough....if you can't give me feelings with old fashioned meanings’ Stefan Thiel (*1965) lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. Seine Arbeiten werden international gezeigt, unter anderem in der Kunsthalle Hamburg, bei Art Unlimited, Art Basel und Mai36, Zürich. Nadine Wottke (*1978) lebt und arbeitet in Erfurt. The idea of ‘If you can, give me love’ is rooted on the desire of the two artists to exhibit together. The show juxtaposes their work in an exciting way. The title is taken from the well-known song ‘If you can‘t, give me love’ by Suzi Quatro from 1978. At that time a rocky ballade in which Quatro claims love from a little disco acquaintance: love, not a one-night-stand. Nobody could imagine what kind of changes the free love movement of the 60’s would bring – or would not bring. Triggered by the birth control pill free love set off to conquer rigid bourgeois morals. Along with the sexual freedom of the 70’s that changed and liberalized our love life political and social upheaval set off. The environmental, anti-nuclear, peace, feminist and gay movements are only a few examples. Our curiosity and desire nowadays is served and appeased by the sheer boundless amount of pictures in the Internet. Today sex whether real or virtual is available at all times. And yet, it seems that the crux of love is the freedom and the unlimited possibilities we have. When it gets down to it, humans are real, are on their own and vulnerable. Thiel and Wottke peep audaciously behind the curtains of self-projection and self-discovery: disarming views of naked beings. Starting from the 19th century ‘album amicorum’, that contained silhouettes of friends, Thiel connects to the present Facebook list of friends. His ‘Black Face Book’ shows homoerotic forms of self-presentation that he started to collect from the Internet and that he later staged and photographed. Album amicorum and Facebook have differing signs. While the silhouette was an acknowledgement of an existing friendship, the Facebook pictures are used to establish new relationships. And just like in an application one strives for a perfect and desirable presentation. Thiels fading out of photographic details, the step back to the silhouette, exposes the pattern of such a convention and requests us to fill the blank space with our own standards and phantasies. Fantasies of our existential vulnerability and our hopes are mirrored in Wottkes Bone China figures. The man on the bull in ‘I don't want your freedom’ is revealing himself in a naked and passionate way: riding on a bull riding machine and leisurely blowing pink chewing gum. Wottke captures the short moment of insight when we stand naked in front of our inner eye and are able to recognise ourselves. The short moment in which, liberated of external and inner forces, we take a deep breath, let loose and understand. Hence, the naked bodies and fetish objects in Wottkes figures are not presenting sexual preferences but work as an emotional support recovering existential riddles. Man, regarding questions of life and viability, has not changed much despite liberal forms of life and technical resources. It is not surprising that also the independent girl rocker Quatro was sighing for a romantic happy-end: ‘That ain’t enough....if you can't give me feelings with old fashioned meanings.’ Stefan Thiel (*1965) lives and works in Berlin.
